I loved the book. There are various elements and account arcs running through the book that I could not befriend but wonder how the director [David Yates] was going to pull it off. Well, the movie is definitely powerful more subdued than its predecessors, both in the effects, the violence, the exercise of witchcraft, even the color palette is muted for most of the movie, conveying a sense of menace and possible doom in the confrontation between pleasurable and disagreeable.

As an ardent fan of the books, and also the movies, I found this particular installment a tad underwhelming. Firstly, I was fearful that the scriptwriters felt they had to include unnecessary scenes that were not even in the book [the waitress and Harry making a date at the beginning, the burning down of the Burrow, etc]. Instead, they left out bits that were actually in the books. Even crucial epic arcs, like the spend of the Pensieve is not given enough cloak time, and seems almost rushed.

One of the enduring appeal of the movie franchise lies in its sense of wonder, and being able to transport viewers into a magical realm, where the spoiled forces under the tutelage of the unlit lord Voldemort try to vanquish the forces of splendid as portrayed by Harry Potter, the Chosen One and also the Order of the Phoenix. In this latest movie installment, I felt that the element of wonder was lacking. Great of what is portrayed is presented as it is, and if this was watched by someone original to the world of Harry Potter, the person would be bewildered and lost. At least in the other installments, especially in the first four, a lot of background information is provided [so that even my husband, who has not read any books in the series was able to follow the story]. For example, there is no hint whatsoever as to why Bellatrix Lestrange has such a venomous hatred of Harry, nor why Harry is hooked on going after her [and I'm not saying why here either, for the sake of HP virgins].

I guess share of the predicament is that HP & the Half-Blood Prince provides the catalyst for the events that are to transpire in the last book, Deathly Hallows, and the movie version is to be played out in two parts. So, understandably, a lot of ground work is laid out here, resulting in a dialogue heavy movie, and less than spectacular special effects [the Quidditch scene was completely underwhelming in my opinion]. The main characters, such as Harry [Daniel Radcliffe], Hermione [Emma Watson], and Ron [Rupert Grint] are also facing some serious hormone issues and relationship problems, hence the rather subdued tone. Gone are the days of easy bantering and camaraderie…the dynamics between the three have shifted to one of awkward uneasiness, as Ron and Hermione try to arrive to terms with the changes in their friendship, and Harry deals with his strong attraction to Ginny Weasley. In this, I felt the actors did a spacious job – the three have arrive a long diagram from their first year at Hogwarts, and have truly embraced these roles, portraying them with depth and insight.

Draco Malfoy’s role as portrayed by Tom Felton, finally gets more visibility. Draco is no longer merely glowering all the time, but deals with some staunch problems that may cost him his very soul, and Felton did a credible job portraying his inner conflict. Michael Gambon is top-notch as Dumbledore, relying more heavily on Harry in this sage, as he tries desperately to inform Potions Professor Slughorn’s [Jim Broadbent]one crucial memory concerning Tom Riddle [the Gloomy Lord] that may benefit in their fight against the Murky Lord.

The others such as Severus Snape [Alan Rickman], Minerva McGonagall [Maggie Smith],& Hagrid [Robbie Coltrane] have less visibility this time around. It really does focus on a impartial a few central characters, though Snape does play an indispensable role here [just that he doesn't pick up as distinguished hide time as I would have liked]. With regards to Snape, I have to say I’m a big fan of Alan Rickman’s acting – he brings substantial depth to the portrayal of the Hogwarts teacher, eliciting reactions that vary from disgust to arouse and even sympathy through the course of the six installments. He impresses even in minor scenes. I do witness forward to more of Snape in the last two installments as his role is pivotal to the series! As for the stern but kind-hearted Prof McGonagall, I have read some reports as to Dame Maggie Smith’s ill health and pray that she is well enough to complete the last two movies, as I simply cannot imagine any other actress in her role.

All in all, it is aloof an bewitching memoir, and I have pre-ordered the DVD. The reason I only gave it three stars is because it did not conclude as faithful to the book as I would have liked, and lacked the tall stout sense of wonder & magic I’ve reach to associate with the series. This has been the darkest installment in the series thus far – so I can understand the depressing tone underlying the movie, yet, I composed feel the director could have veteran better colors and lightened up some aspects of the movie where appropriate. Btw, I found the regain completely underwhelming, and I really miss the fantastic fetch that was in the earlier movies [except Fragment 5]. Here’s hoping Deathly Hallows Fraction I and II will fare better [also directed by David Yates].

My main gripe with the previous Harry Potter movie “Order of the Phoenix” was that for some uncommon reason they took the longest of the books and turned it into the shortest Harry Potter movie to date. The result was that I felt like I was watching the movie cruise by on a speeding thunder, as it rushed from one key event to another without really taking the time to stare anything in detail.

Now we follow up with “Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince” and….what a inequity. There are plenty of cuts of course, no Harry Potter movie can be free of cuts without being waaaay too long. But the movie’s length was at least comparable to some of the others. The 3 lead characters were as space on as ever. Michael Gambon finally brings a bit more warmth to his portrayal of Albus Dumbledor than he brought to the last few movies. Tom Felton played Draco Malfoy with all the depth one would hope for in his most distinguished role in the series. Alan Rickman isn’t seen too great as Severus Snape, but when he is he’s as astonishing as ever.

I really consider this may be the best Harry Potter film yet, and I was really starting to believe after the last film that the yarn had gotten to huge for them to manage in film. Ample work guys.

The 1982 sequl to Airplane! is basically more of the same class-clown ironies but with a more forced feeling to the jokes. In the first film, veterans such as Peter Graves, Robert Stack, and Lloyd Bridges were feeling their way through self-parody, and the air of experimentation was part of the fun. By this film, however, everybody knows what’s up, and the assuredness of new cast members Raymond Burr, William Shatner, and Chuck Connors is almost counterproductive. Along with Fantasia and Fantasia 2000, the anthology set contains a third disc that examines a segment of both movies in detail. Each segment has an introduction that has experts (including Leonard Maltin), producer Roy E. Disney, or the animators setting up the piece’s history. Notes on the music and dozens of design photos are included on all the segments, although others offer more intriguing features. Abandoned animation is shown on many segments, as are a few behind-the-scenes shorts; the most intriguing are experts from Walt Disney’s hosted documentaries on how his company made movies. As for the photos, they are awkwardly catalogud and only the most patient of viewers would want to look at all of them. In some segments, though, these images are entertainingly produced as a “story reel,” presenting these images–rough animation, sketches, pastel paintings–with the musical accompaniment. For those looking for a more well-rounded view of the films, the two one-hour documentaries on each film’s disc lay the groundwork, but none of the anthology looks at how the first film was seen through the years or gives time to anyone who wasn’t gung-ho about every element of the films. There is hardly a mention of embarrassing stereotypes that were matted (and still are) out of the “Pastoral” segment, or the intriguing aspect of the film as a ’60s icon for the ultimate head-trip. Disney does let their guard down to show sequnces that were being readied in 1940 for future editions (including a recently restored short scored to “Clair de Lune”). Most tantalizing is a look at how the special effects were done in the original film. The guide is a scrapbook that one of the technicians kept and was discovered only in 1990. Fans can only hope a reproduction will be made available someday. –Doug Thomas

Seven travelers stranded in the Italian countryside accept the hospitality of a kindly castle lord, but what horror awaits them: the family has a curse on it that dooms the eldest daughter of each generation to become an agent of the devil, and guss who’s coming home. After a striking opening scene (involving a Nazi officer in 1944 overseeing the birth of his child, which turns out to be… an accursed daughter!), this horror tale drags along at a glacial pace until the visitors settle in enough to take a little time out for sex, which serves as an appetizer to sadistic murders. The gusts, ostensibly representative of the Seven Deadly Sins, die in appropriately thematic twists at first, though after gluttony, greed, and lust the point gets stretched. This low-budget example of horrotica has its entertaining moments, an appropriately lurid style (courtesy of Belgian director Jean Brismee), and even an appearance by former French matinee idol Jean Servais (Beauty and the Beast). Included are trailers for this and three other Italian exploitation films and an extended introduction by British horror hostess Eileen Daly (which was actually recorded for a different film!), a black-leather Elvira with a whip and a penchant for kink that may not be to the tastes of all audiences. -Sean Axmaker
